Throughout the past three decades, Slippery Rock University's own student-run radio station has seen two renovations, 10 advisers, and countless technical mishaps; but one thing has stayed consistent, Chief Engineer, Werner Ullrich III.
Being a history buff, I've had the distinct pleasure of working with Werner this year, who clues me into the wild history of his time with WRCK, WSRK and now WSRU. Werner quite literally built the entire station's equipment with his own two hands, everything in the studios was been purchased, engineered and set-up to perfection, all by Werner himself.
Werner also has a unique story to tell, from being the heir-apparent to his family's bakery, joining the military to become an "electron-head," then coming to SRU as an English based graduate student and joining the radio station.
Werner is the sole reason WSRU is still running and would give everything up to make sure that it stayed that way. He calls the station his electric baby and if you saw him working on anything, you'd understand why.
I hope to cover him for this project to put his story on paper so to speak and immortalize him aside from the stories he tells to those who are interested.
